What we offer.

The interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in Buddhist Studies at LMU welcomes postgraduates from the Humanities, Cultural and Religious Studies.

Applicants with an above-average degree in one of the participating disciplines (Indology, Tibetology, Sinology, Japanese Studies, Religious Studies, and Philosophy of Religion) or a related field, combined with knowledge of at least one historical source language of Buddhism and a research focus on Buddhist Studies, will find the program a good fit.

The program is part of the vibrant research community of the Munich Center for Buddhist Studies. Individual mentoring and comprehensive academic training are central elements of the program, ensuring a high level of academic qualification.

The Doctoral Program in Buddhist Studies is designed to be completed in three to four years. Based on the Doctoral Degree Regulations and its amendments the program concludes with the internationally recognized degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Dr. phil.).

The program is conducted primarily in English. Some supplementary courses are offered in German. Depending on the focus of your dissertation project, German language skills may be beneficial.
